History
Background
For the last few years, a number of faculty members of the Dept. of Computer Sc. & Engg. have been engaged in research on different topics related to the field of Distributed Computing. Of particular interest are topics like hardware and software fault tolerance, reliability, security and synchronization in Distributed Systems. A good number of sponsored research projects have been completed and many are being currently pursued. The number of research reports prepared and papers published is also remarkable. A Master’s level course on Distributed Systems has been introduced and the number of Master's theses related to Distributed Systems is reckonable. Some infrastructure has already been developed to carry out further research work in the subject. In 1999 and 2000, the Department has hosted successfully two workshops on Distributed Computing with international participation, culminating in an International Workshop on Distributed Computing (IWDC) being organized by leading academic institutions of West Bengal. National and International
Scenario
At the national level, a number of individuals and groups are working
in various IIT’s and Universities as well as in R&D Labs of ISRO, DRDO,
etc. A number of leading Indian companies and multinationals are engaged
in the development of products and systems related to Distributed
Computing and require knowledge and human input for the success of their
efforts. The Centre
It is in this backdrop that the Centre for Distributed Computing was created in the year 2002 under the Department of Computer Sc. & Engg. primarily to consolidate the ongoing research activities in the area and to initiate joint open-ended research programs with a view to catering to the needs of the Industry and R&D sector in particular, and the society at large. It is felt that Distributed Computing as a field has matured to come out of the four walls of the Laboratory and today, various concepts and products are being used in practice in Industry, Commerce, Military, Administration and even in Education. There is a growing need to develop and publish basic knowledge in the field and create a channel for timely utilization of the knowledge by the different organs of Society |
