Location

Kolkata (internationally known as Calcutta) the capital of the state of West Bengal is popularly known as the "City of Joy". This is truly a megacity on the banks of the river Ganges.

If you plan to travel by air, come to the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose airport which hosts both domestic and international terminals. You should then reach Jadavpur University -- hiring a cab (taxi) from the pre-paid taxi booth costs you 250-300 Indian Rupees. Jadavpur University, celebrating its Golden Jubilee year, is one of the most renowned universities of India.

This City has 2 big railway junctions (Howrah and Sealdah) that serve as gateways for journeys to and from any part of the country.

If you are coming from one of the railway stations, it is better to hire a taxi from the pre-paid taxi booth. The pre-paid taxi fare is marginally higher than normal (approximately Rs. 180-200  from Howrah, and Rs. 160-180  from Sealdah) but it is a surer and safer mode of transport.

Climate
Kolkata is warm and humid most of the year around. However, the
winter months, from November to February are cool, sunny, dry and very pleasant. Monsoon hits Kolkata generally in the second week of June and lasts till the end of September. During this period it rains regularly. The total rainfall during the season is about 20 cm. The temperature in summer goes up to about 37 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity up to 100%. During winter months the temperature ranges from about 10 to 20 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity is around 50%. Light woolen clothing is necessary during winter in Kolkata.
